Hello, Welcome to Seven Songs a Week
Today's song is "Glad You Came" by British-Irish boy band, The Wanted. The Wanted formed in 2009 and consisted of five members, Max, Siva, Jay, Tom and Nathan. The Wanted gained popularity in the U.K. with their first album "The Wanted" and singles "All Time Low" and "Heart Vacancy." Their first album reached the top four on the Official Album Charts and the two singles reached the top two of the Official Charts Company. The Wanted finally blew up in the United States with their second single, "Glad You Came" from their second studio album "Battleground."

Thematically, The song is about being glad to see your crush at a party. However, many listeners thought that the song was a double entendre because of the emphasize on the lyric "glad you came." Tom Parker, member of "The Wanted" playfully changed the lyric to "i'm glad you gushed" confirming the rumors. The song begins with Mac George wanting to live in the moment of the night with his crush and how he will never be the same after this night. Nathan Sykes continues this notion describing the spell he has been placed in by his crush and how their visage stopped him in his track. He decides that they would be a good couple and tries to woo his crush by spending some alone time with them. My favorite part is the pre-chorus because it is an anadipolis. An anadipolis is when the last word on the line of a stanza is the beginning of the next line. "Turn the lights out now, Now, I'll take you by the hand" Tom Parker takes the crush to a new room to be in private. "Hand you another drink, Drink it if you can. Can you spend a little time?" Parker gives his crush a drink to ease their nerves, the room is so dark that the crush can't even see where their drink is. Time is slipping away. Away from us, so stay, Stay with me, I can make Make you glad you came. Parker tells his crush that he wants his crush to stay with him, whether it's for the night or the rest of his life. Parker shows his crush his love with his intimacy and skill in bed. The song repeats itself while the other members sing the verse and chorus.
There isn't too much to say about the "Glad You Came" video. The video shows the boy band seducing women at a pool party. They more or less follow what the lyrics are saying but I didn't expect too much for this video, it's a party song and that's what was popular at the time.
I love this song, Once I found out about the wordplay in the pre-chorus, it made me love it even more. This song is truly of it's time though but I think it's one of the more interesting ones because of it's word play and how The Wanted barely lasted in the United States.
I give “Glad You Came” 4.5 2010s party anthems out of 5.
